Maria Ann Smith (1801-1870), during her sixties, was experimenting in Australia with a hardy French crabapple seedling from which developed the late-ripening Granny Smith apple, which because of its outstanding taste and keeping qualities formed the bulk of Australia's apple exports for many years.
