American general and statesman George C. Marshall became Secretary of State at the age of sixty-seven (1947), and for the next two years he developed the enormously successful Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Europe. For this remarkable effort, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of seventy-three.
