Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997), the French oceanographer and filmmaker, popularized the study of the ocean environment through his many books, films, and television productions. The 1953 publication of The Silent World gained him international recognition. The book was subsequently made into a documentary that received an Academy Award. His partly autobiographical final book, Man, the Octopus, and the Orchid, was published after his death at age eighty-seven.
