The great twentieth-century Abstract Expressionist painter Willem De Kooning (1904-1997) developed Alzheimer's disease in his late seventies. But for the next few years, into his early eighties, De Kooning continued to create museum-quality paintings, demonstrating the capacity for preserved skills despite the decline typical of Alzheimer's.
