Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) was the American pathologist who discovered the four major blood groups (O, A, B, AB) in 1901. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 (at age sixty-two). In 1940, a the age of seventy-two, he discovered the Rhesus (Rh) blood factor.
